If you think condominiums are somehow cold and uncaring places to live, we have a story for you.
At West Ocean, a condominium complex along the Ocean Corridor in Downtown Long Beach, they do something unique and special every holiday season.
It’s called the Giving Tree.
Back in 2010, a group of West Ocean residents organized by Rola Karam formed a social club to do something more for the local community around the holidays. It’s called Learn and Love Long Beach.
Each year, they research non-profit organizations near West Ocean, in Downtown Long Beach that needs assistance. They pick different charities each year. This season, they have chosen to sponsor two projects in the loving memory of residents who have passed away.
One project is for the Fisher House, in memory of Steve Kuykendall. Fisher House Southern California is a home away from home for the family of Veterans who is seeking medical care at the VA Long Beach Medical Center. Steve helped build the Fisher House and served on the board.
The second project is named Books for Children, in memory of Paul Kennard. They collect books for children lacking in learning resources. Paul was active in sharing his love for reading with children.
There are trees with symbolic ornaments in each building with donation lists and information sheets.
Significantly more than $10,000 has been collected for the people in need over the years. The support from the residents and community has been generous and overwhelming. Plus, this project allows them to learn about local charities, making lasting connections within their own residential community.
This says so much about Rola and the thoughtful people of West Ocean. Just think of this tradition that spread to other communities. Rola and West Ocean Homeowners Association are great examples of how you can make a difference.
Do you want to join this community effort? Here at the Mike Dunfee Group, we’re more than happy to get you in touch with the right people… because community matters.
